#2 You could travel by foot, or mule, to a nearby island in the past. Hold your thoughts, you could travel by land but that wasn’t because the sea wasn’t there. In fact, thanks to recent fossils being found, we know that all of Vancouver Island used to be under water. So how did people travel by foot to anywhere off the island? There were tunnels. They ran under Nanaimo Harbour to Protection Island. The purpose was to transport coal. Eventually, all these caves flooded. There are very few remnants found, but you can find some in south Nanaimo. #3 Page Lagoon used to be a whaling station. Yes, they actually beached whales right from the land. That is, until 1908 when the whales disappeared. It was a big deal and brought a lot of money to the island. The whales disappeared, now we are learning these are smart animals, but that wasn’t the reason. They were almost fished to extinction. It could possibly be a place to see whales now days, but maybe that is something you should explore. The old building can still be found on the island, but it has been moved. You have to find it. They also have an amazing ball field there.
